Gambіt 1.0

Gambіt is a Mаc OS X application for chess play and analysis. It allows play against the chess engine "Crаfty," which is open-source freeware developed by Dr. Robert Hyatt. And, it allows completed games to be recorded, replayed, annotated, and analyzed. Gambіt is 100% compatible with the PGN format standard; not only does it read, display, and save all of the standard PGN tag-value pairs, it retains non-standard pairs when a game with any is modified and re-saved. The latest release is Gambіt 1.0.1, which is localized in English and French; translation to French is by Philippe Bonnaure – Mаc VF.

Gambіt is shareware and the fully-featured version can be used for 30 days at no cost. It is a Cоcoa application and requires Mаc OS X 10.3 (Panther) or later. Gambіt 1.0.1 has been tested on Intel-based Macs and runs perfectly under "Rosetta" emulation.

Playing Games Against Crаfty

Games can be played against the chess engine "Crаfty," which is a descendent of "Cray Blіtz." Gambіt's user interface is uncluttered and simple to use. Moves are made by dragging and dropping pieces, a clock is present for timed play, and a move list can be displayed or hidden. Game options include Crаfty's search depth, timed vs. untimed play, and set up of the initial position. In addition, board appearance and style of chess pieces are selectable. Completed games can be saved in the PGN format for later annotation and analysis.

Annotating and Analyzing Games

Gambіt allows games in files in the PGN format to be viewed, replayed, annotated, and analyzed. And, it allows games to be entered and saved to PGN files. Annotation can be in the form of variations (including sub-variations), punctuation, evaluation, and comments. Optional computer-aided analysis by Crаfty is based both on the evaluation of potential moves and on the use of opening and endgame books. Analysis can be performed on each move of a game, or can be done for an individual position pasted into or set up in Gambіt. It provides a score that indicates relative advantage of White or Black, and also provides a "best line" for the color on move.

Examining Game

Gambіt's List window allows easy access to multiple PGN files. The content of a given file can be searched and sorted, and any or all of the games in a file can be examined. Games also can be copied and pasted between files.
