Features

PGN Format. Gambіt uses and is 100% compatible with the PGN (Portable Game Notation) format standard. (Find more about the PGN format at: http://www.very-best.de/pgn-spec.htm .)

Annotating Games. Gambіt allows variations (and sub-variations) to be added to the move list, and the list to be annotated with standard PGN symbolic punctuation and evaluation (glyphs) or with text comments.

Annotation Example

Crаfty, which is open-source freeware by Dr. Robert Hyatt, has had winning records in recent World Computer Chess competitions. Find more about Crаfty at: http://www.cis.uab.edu/info/faculty/hyatt/hyatt.html .

Using Opening Book and Endgame Tablebases. An opening book is included with the Gambіt download, and additional opening book files can be created by running Crаfty as a terminal application. Endgame tablebases are not included with the Gambіt download because they are so large, but they can be downloaded from the Crаfty web site for free.

Setting Up Initial Position. The initial position of games can be the standard opening position (16 pieces per side, etc.), it can be set up by placing or removing pieces, it can be copied and pasted from an existing game, or can be pasted as a plain text FEN (Forsyth-Edwards Notation) record.

Board Set Up Window

Capturing Positions. An image of any position can be created by copying and pasting the position to a graphics application that understands the .tiff format. In the application Preview just select Edit > New from Clipboard. Positions also can be copied to and from ScrapX™, Aqueous Software's scrapbook for Mаc OS X. When pasted back to Gambіt, the position is playable and all game information is retained.

Game Information. Gambіt allows easy recording of the PGN seven-tag roster and all of the other game information tags. To simplify entry of game information, when a game is played against Crаfty some tags are captured automatically, and when a series of games is being entered or played some tags can be repeated from earlier games.

Searching and Sorting Game Files. In the List window the content of a Games file can be searched using the Search widget and sorted by selecting column headers in the Games list. By default, searches are done on the seven-tag roster (Event, Site, Date, Round, White, Black, and Result). But, searches also can be done on all data (which includes Annotator, for example) or only on selected fields (Players, White, Black, Result, Event, or ECO).

Multiple Windows. Any number of game windows can be open simultaneously for play or analysis.

User Preferences

Board. Board preferences allow setting the square and border colors, whether board rank and file labels are shown, whether a sound is made when a piece is moved, and which set of chess pieces is used.

Move List. Move List preferences allow selection of the notation language and the color used to display comments.

Crаfty. Crаfty preferences set search depth for new games and determine whether endgame tablebases are used by Crаfty when it is playing a game. (Search depth determines how many moves ahead Crаfty is allowed to look.)

User. User preferences contain the user's name and rating. This information is placed in the game information when a game is played against Crаfty.
